Our Story

Our story starts at Horizon High School, sort of. Wendyand I had a class together (WAFL - World Literature/World History - I know, the acronym doesn'tmake any sense. As far as I can tell, no one knows why its called WAFL) . I remembered her as a super smart over achiever, and she remembered me as an over-rated “school artist” guy (she was probably just jealous). I personally remember competing for the better grade with her, but apparently I was playing some sort of solitary game; I wasn’t even on her radar. So we went our separate ways, without a clue to the significance of whom we had just met.

10 years later.

Horizon High School has the 1995 ten year reunion (which I almost didn’t go to!). I showed up with my friend Summer who I’ve known since the 3rd grade, and Wendy shows up with her then boyfriend. We remembered each other right away and reminisced about our funny misconceptions of each other. Being that both of us where in a relationship at that time, neither of us could have imagined what was going to happen just a few years latter.

2 years later.

I got an email from Wendy. That fateful day, as often happens at high school reunions, we all exchanged emails with empty intentions of rekindling old friendships. Wendy remembered that I said I was a graphic designer of some sort and needed some help with a menu for her dad’s restaurant. So we took a long lunch and talked about the menu and caught up on what’s been going on in the last two years. It turned out that the both of us were single now. What luck. But honestly, I didn’t think much of it. Actually, I did think about it, but I really didn’t think it was an option. Wendy was so smart and beautiful and funny… how could she be interested in little ol’ me? We had a couple more lunches together while I kept going on lame internet dates, never realizing, that I was already going on much better dates with Wendy.

On one of these lunches, we agreed that we should go see a movie. Even though I told myself it wasn’t a “DATE”, I had my suspicions and secret hopes that it was. After the movie we went for dinner, and I was having such a good time I was able to summon up enough courage to ask her if this was a date, or something else. Though I never actually got a straight answer from her, she never said that it wasn’t a date; I took this as a good sign.

That was when I decided to take her on the classic “Josh Date”. Which was the Denver Art Museum and then lunch at that little English pub on the corner. However, it didn’t turn out to be an average Josh Date. We went to the art museum as usual, but by the time we left, it was getting dark, and there happened to be the parade of lights that night (all of this I found out later was planed by Wendy). We got a coffee at the local Starbucks and went to the Parade of Lights. It was so exciting and magical, just like in some dumb romantic comedy. When I saw the lights from the parade in her eyes, and felt her warm hand through her glove, I knew we had stumbled onto something very important.

So that’s the short of it, at least from my perspective, the story of how we fell in love.
